How to paint a wooden box to look like an old time crate?

I bought this little wooden crate like box at a garage sale. I think it is rather old because of the way the handle is and the type of box it is. Someone painted it over and over and over again. I tried to sand it down, but the is so much old paint on it, it is useless. Help me to find a way to paint it in a way that will make it look like an old crate again.

Can you post a photo? I have several old boxes, some painted, some not - depending on what color you want it - I agree chalk paint could be a good choice with the dry brushing technique. However, if you want it more natural wood - use a brown antique wax, rubbing it in different areas.
