Ours was hardwood on top. I remember reading about stripping veneer the other day on one of the blogs. Will look it up for you. I used Minwax fast drying polyurethane in clear satin to seal it.

dias my friend paints furniture...you need to buy Annie Sloan paint,wax it,and prime it with Zinzzer(sp) 123 before you start...that's it and you will have a gorgeous finish :)
