Can refurbished vintage wood re-stained to a darker color?

Danielle Sallada on Sep 25, 2013Linseed Oil is generally used to seal the wood, so you might have some problems with it taking a dark stain. I would try a test piece to see what happens since you sanded.Helpful Reply

Seidman Paperhanging on Sep 26, 2013I would use oil based stain. Linseed oil penetrates into the wood and you'd have to sand pretty far down to get rid of it. Oil & water are not that compatible. Linseed oil is a finish, not a sealer or protectant . the rule of thumb with linseed oil is once a day for a week, once a week for a year, once a year.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Sep 26, 2013water based over the oil is not going to work, some light sanding (220 grit) then follow with some oil based minwax. I would then let is dry for a few days them repeat...and let that dry for a few days. Then you will want to topcoat to seal the color in. For that I would use minwaxs wiping poly. This come is satin or gloss and is very easy to apply. I normally use 3 or 4 coats with a 320 grit rubdowm before the final coat.Helpful Reply
