Hardwood Underlayment Alternatives

We are going to install bamboo onto a wood subfloor and I am looking for underlayment that is safe and eco friendly. I worry about off gassing with the 15# felt and read that plastic should not be used on wood. Cost is also a factor. Any ideas?

I always use felt tar paper..There's not enough off gassing put out to do any harm to any one ..
