Cedar chest repair

I have a cedar chest that has been in my family for years. It is unique in that it looks like the exterior is some type of hard cloth. When I acquired this many years ago, I acquired a puppy about the same time. It chewed a corner piece of this cedar chest. I have never tried to repair it because I didn't want to spoil the original charm; however, I'm also not able to use it out where it can be appreciated.
I'm looking for suggestions on repairing this unique piece.

Looks like grass cloth. Check with a wallpaper supply place and see if you can get something similar.

Yes, it does look like grass cloth!! Just a guess....but probably will not find the exact?? That being the case, you may have to take it all off and replace with new?!?

can you add a piece of wood, the same colour as the front ornate bit. That way you could keep the original covering and cover the damage. You would have to do both sides or even all way round.

Possibly cut, or find someone who can cut, two pieces of wood trim a bit bigger than the original arc bamboo trim now on the piece. Being a bit larger will incorporate the damaged corner and you can stain it to match the legs. Perhaps they can even use a decorative edge to your piece as well. Purchase or make "half moon" leather pieces and glue them to the outside of the 4 corners of the chest, then use decorative nail heads to form a border on the curved parts. It'll look like those always belonged there! :)

I would cut out the corners that are lined by the Bamboo? curved pieces. repair the place outside of that curve with some of the good part that you have cut out THEN cover the corners with??? Leather was a good idea although expensive but vinyl, or wallpaper, or bamboo strips. Ideas are endless.

Could be repaired if you could ever find the correct size of material (bamboo or rattan) but would be a lot more work than the suggestions of covering all the corners to match with wood trim or leather. If you use leather I would use a garment weight leather covering over a wood or heavy card stock pattern. This would be easier to attach (screw from inside) without adding glue to the existing weaving.

If you wanted to use leather at a good price (seems like the best option to me) try thrift stores for a leather coat that is in good condition. The ones around here are very inexpensive. That way you would be able to cut some practice pieces.

Thank you to all who responded. Great, helpful ideas. I'm going to see what materials I can round up quickly and will post results.

I would also try to contact the Lane Company (I believe they are still in existence) and see if they have a suggestion. They may have materials similar to what was used in the original chest that you could purchase.
