I have layers of wallpaper on my bathroom walls. How to get rid of it

I moved into a home built in the 70's. The bathroom has been wallpapered at least 4 times. What is the easiest way to remove it, so I can paint it? Or should I try to wallpaper over it again? It is so dated!

  • Whatever you do do not wallpaper over. There are so many options but first the cheapest~hot water in a spray bottle and keep soaking the wall paper and it may come off concentrating on the seams. Then there is 1/2 fabric softener and 1/2 hot water in a spray bottle and keep spraying. Vinegar and hot water but the smell can be overwhelming and I use a mixture of vinegar and water to remove any residue glue after I peel the wallpaper. do not waste money on store bought products they do not work. If there are that many layers the hot water should get you started. Just lay towels all around the bottom of the wall to catch drips. Steamers sometimes work. But keep soaking the paper and you may scratch the wallpaper with small steel putty knife about a 45degree angel carefully so you do not gouge the walls. good luck! I hope this helps

If there are layers rent or buy a wallpaper steamer. It takes time and it will leave marks on the wall but then spread a thin coat of dry wall mud and sand it. It might take several layers of mud. But use a drywall sander. Some have a screen it in and it will cut down the dry wall mud quickly. You will be happy to get the wall paper off. I am no professional but I have done this many times, including every wall in my old house. They even papered the cabinets.

I would rent a commercial steamer and the spiked tool to take it off I there are that many layers you will need a steamer to remove it and as someone else said by using fabric softener on it that helps too it will take some work but it will be worth it in the end

Removing wallpaper is always a time consuming, exhausting, nasty job...yes you can rent commercial equipment but in the end the walls will end up damaged from all the scraping and need mud applied to even out everything. I would suggest you get some quotes from several reliable painters/wallpaper removal professionals to see if it would be worth it for you to have it done by them...we just had our Master BR and Bath paper removed & both rooms repainted...a job we never considered doing ourselves & it was well worth it to see the professional results! Good Luck!!

Oh my friend, don't work so hard. BEAD BOARD & TEXTURED PAINT will do wonders for your beautiful room. 4 layers of paper will be laborious but doable. Hot water and fabric softener, IF you choose to go that route. Works for me every time.

I took 4 layers off my bathroom to; piece by piece..but it was not that hard. I just wipe down the paper with a fairly wet sponge, let it sit a bit then peel the face paper off and repeat, and repeat but I also use a 5n1 scraper tool and it goes somewhat quickly. The scary part is what you might find under all that paper...bad walls that have to be refinished anyway? Who knows. Hometalkers gave you some good ideas above..you can also just add another layer of 1/2" drywall but you will have to deal with any outlets or door jambs with extensions depending on the layout (not really a big deal) What ever you do, enjoy the process and know when you are done it will be all yours and you will be so proud!!
