Paint home exterior and update porch

Question

I bought this home in 2014, and have slowly been making changes to it. We recently had the landscaping done and now we are interested in painting the house a different color that gives it more curb appeal and makes it look brighter. I would also like to update the porch and was thinking maybe I should change the pillars or the railing. Any ideas please!!!!

First of all, absolutely beautiful home!!  If it was ours, I'd paint the siding a lighter tan / brown (something to coordinate with the stone).  Something along the line of the trim around the eves, windows and columns on porch.   Like a reverse of what you currently have.  Do the trim in the dark brown.  A lighter porch  would POP!   The columns on the carport in the light color as well.   AGAIN, it's absolutely gorgeous.

I also thought of the tan - but only IF you want your stone to be less prominent. Not sure if that's what you want to do. If you're trying to get away from the brown family, you could try a rusty red or a sage green for your siding. I agree with Pam; it's a beautiful home.

Beautiful home. My opinion I would choose a lighter color as well but not make the stone blend in to much. Maybe choose a coordinating shade from the stone that will blend with every aspect of your home.

I'd definitely color the house a brighter color so looking into the depth of the porch is brighter.  Most valuable tool is the LRV number for colors: it's a light reflective value number that really tells you how bright a color will effect a darkened area.  If you love a color, find it in a lighter shade to bring out the shadows.  Tans would be great, just the right light value! I might get rid of the Y trim on the porch, just another obstruction that does not add value to such a beautiful home. Using the color of the roof, find a light tone for the house and either a mid-tone or a fun color contrast for the deck and trim.  It will all frame the stone and be a great backdrop to the beautiful yard.

It would be nice in a light sage green--something to tie it to the landscaping. It kind of floats now and is too much brown.  If you are bold you could go 
with a pumpkin color and eggplant accents but bold is tricky if you don't choose the colors perfectly.  Your covered porch is a great asset and will be dynamite when the overall color is lightened up. If you can paint the porch ceiling a very light color like cream it will help too.  Bringing some greenery onto the porch by hanging  ferns or flower baskets in the porch bays would really give it even more curb appeal.

Love love love your house!! I think if it were mine I would go with a gray color on the house.  I think tan would be too close a color to the stone. And some shade of white on the porch. Off white or creamy white. Good luck!!

I agree with the green,,,  I would make it a cool green..  I think warm greens get boring ....you could even go with a shade of blue/gray that blends with your stone.....  would love to see photo of your decision.  What ever you choose ,,, keep your roof and  landscape colors in mind.

Lovely home! I would definitely go with a pale, cool grey with white trim, & paint the entire porch white! It will pop out & shine! Yes, get rid of the Y bars if you can & also, if you can afford it, change the railings for glass & yacht wire! That would look stunning! Good luck!

Gorgeous home.  Virtual-paint sites at Valspar, Sherrington-Williams, Benjamin Moore and a site called Paint Net.  You upload a photo, then paint it for free. 
 For a house that size I'd be tempted to try one of these first. 
  You'll have to pick the perfect gray since your roof is brown and such a dominant feature.   But I will admit to being a 'tan' person, and can't help but think it would flatter and deemphasize the stonework at the same time.   There  are Hundreds of tan/beige shades out there.   Painting the pillars the same color as the house would work well, and not threaten the structural support for your very long roof overhang.

One thing I noticed was the different colors and 'media' of the porch.  The pillars in white, and then it looks like brown wood and is the side stair rail in iron?  I think if it were my decision I would unify all the deck/porch into a single color, lighter like the stone to make it really pop as a focal point- it has beautiful lines that are fading back with the dark house color. My house was the same color when I bought it. I decided to go with a nice pale moss green for the body of the house. It made the house seem so much larger. Keep the trim tan to play off the stone work. Beautiful home - best of luck!

If the brown paint or stain is good, I would paint the porch and trim white or cream, and have flowers in containers on rail

Lovely as is, but a soft, grayish green with cream accents might give you the 'pop' you are looing for and will work well with the existing landscaping.  I would also change the railings to cream, and make sure that the colors blend well with the stone grouting.

Lovely home, I would paint the porch a lighter color in a cream color palette and replicate the stone on the house by out lining the front garden with large stone, not a lot, but placed strategically to pick up the front and side of stone on the house.

Agree the porch is too dark and not welcoming.  Paint the posts and rails the same color as the window trim.  You could make the windows under the roof more noticeable by framing them with a wider trim board or narrow plank shutters and painting them and your door frame to match the railing (I like white or cream).  Then paint your front door a bold color to make it stand out.   You could also paint under the porch roof a much lighter color to reflect more light.  Nice white porch lights would be a nice touch.

Love the stone work and the bow windows.  You have red or red brown shingles so I'm not sure about the greens.  I'd go with a very pale like celery if at all.  I was thinking a very light barely there tan for the house.  Porch railings a lighter shade of brown with complete column going white.  The window trim would go dark  close to color of shingles.  Pick up some of those color blocks and pick something to coordinate with the rocks.  The carport needs to follow through with the Porch railing color.  Ceiling of porch light and bright gloss finish to reflect light.

You have a beautiful Ranch home. I like the porch and it goes with the style of house. A lighter trim color like a warm white would look good on the porch and trim, with a warm grey on the house. I don't often recommend beige for anything but you could pick a color that complements the stone trim for the body of the house.  Front door could be red, dark green, purple or anything that catches your eye.  My porches have railings like yours and I want to remove the spindles and install 4x4 hog/livestock wire; provides safety but basically disappears at a distance.  Love the landscaping.  Wonder if there is an entrance to your house without steps?

I would choose a color for the siding that is between what is there now, and the color of the stone. The porch is so dark, that the lighter color will make it stand out. Keep the dark brown in the trim, though.  The porch railings - I would paint them all one color, in the shade you use for the trim.

What a GREAT house!!  Love the architucture!  In my opinion, I would paint the outside of the house a warm ivory, something to go with your roof.  Then, select a color you love for the front door and any other areas you choose to highlight.  Maybe your pallet can come from the bushes in your front yard? What a beautiful home! I would choose a color palette based on the colors of the stonework on the front of your home and your roof (unless you plan to change that out too). I would be careful with changing the porch railing and installing pillars. You want keep with the style of your house. The worse thing you can do is add something that does not fit with the style of your home.

I think the brick work stands out like a sore thumb while it is balanced e.g. it is on both sides there is nothing to tie it into the rest of the house.  The porch looks dark.  I would try painting the entire porch, floors, steps, pillars a colour that blends in with the stone work and see if you can get some sky lights in the porch area to allow the sun to shine through.

Lovely home, I think the  railing should be same color of pillars and put red cedar shaving around house an maybe two big hanging vern plants, and  a  couple of landscape lights where you  put red ceder to highlight it at night , oh yes I think the red ceder will help bring out the color, lovely lovely home , do whatever makes you happy, enjoy
