I used green painters tape and drywall putty.
Use 1/4" painters tape to make a design of tiles you like on your backsplash. You can mix sizes, shapes, whatever you like.
When you have your design taped onto the wall, use a small trowel to put the drywall putty on the wall. Spread it over the entire wall, don't worry about the tape, more later.
You can adjust the texture to make it smooth or a little uneven like tumbled travertine marble.
Let it dry overnight.
When it'S dry, gently pull the tape off. The lines where the tape was are your "grout" lines.
Now you can colour your tiles. I used a sea sponge dipped in several shapes of taupe, browns, a little splash of brick colour. When that was done, I used an art brush to colour the grout lines a complimentray colour. Or if you know what colour you want beforehand, just paint the wall, it will be revealed when you pull off the tape. You can seal it when you're happy with the effects. Mine turned out awesome.
We left it like that for a few years until we could afford the real travertine tiles.
if and when you want to remove it, it all comes off with a putty knife and some elbow grease.
Super inexpensive.
I have been in my house almost 50 years, and we've ne er installed a backsplash. We always paint the kitchen with satin or gloss paint, and have never had a problem.
Peel & Stick tiles.
Cool bumper stickers that are free - usually glossy so you can wipe the area clean with ease !
My husband made a beautiful back splash using
sheet metal. Very easy to care for.
would love to do that in my place. i have sheet metal behind my stove covering up 50 assorted screw holes. could you post fo me the method/ type of suplies he used?
Cheap and easy, get cork shelf liner in a roll. Cut and measure twice, stick up, with Mod Podge or other glue, paint 3 coats of matte or gloss polyurethane over the cork, very washable, Done.
Watch for sales at stores like Menards, Home Depot or Lowes. Most tile is fairly easy to install as long as you keep it simple
How about removable wallpaper? They make it in a variety of styles and colors and you don't glue it on. Measure, cut, and stick. Check Target's website for available options. I know they used to carry a few that looked like subway tile and stone.
