What style are these chairs? What are they called?

Shari on Sep 30, 2013The curvy legs indicate French style and the vertical tufting on the backrests are called channel backs...French channel back chairs. I've seen a few of these chairs where the wood has been painted black and reupholstered in white fabric and the black/white contrast is stunning and very sophisticated. What do you envision for them?Helpful Reply

Cindy Morgan on Oct 01, 2013Thank you @Shari , @Carole , and @Kimberly C. I'm reupholstering the chairs for my neice. I reupholstered an antique couch for her a few years ago and did that in a white brocade. She hasn't decided on the fabric yet. She is considering white, fleur-de-le blue print or cranberry. This will be my first channel back!Helpful Reply

Toni Pardoe Ellsworth on Oct 01, 2013Good luck on your project. The channel back is kind of tricky to redo, but it will be worth it in the end. Do you know your colors yet?Helpful Reply

Shari on Oct 01, 2013I don't reupholster but I've have heard the channel backs can be a bear to do, particularly if there is a pattern that needs matching. For your own sanity, you might want to casually steer your niece away from anything with a print. ;) I have also heard channel backs take more fabric than you would think since you are tucking a lot into the channels. Obviously, the more channels, the more fabric will be used. They are really pretty chairs and should look fabulous when you are done though! Good luck!Helpful Reply

Cathy on Oct 01, 2013Hi, I have a set of chairs that look similiar. Though yours look older from a vintage point of view. Love the furniture tacks. I was always told the chairs were a channel-back Queen Anne style. I recovered mine several years ago at a night school class for reupholstering. I chose these as my first project. Nothing like doing the hardest first! :-) The channels were so hard to do and such a pain in the tush. I'm glad I went that route as the pain was well worth it. I've also seen this type of chair with tufted backs. Also quite nice. Can't wait to see your tutorial and the finished product.Helpful Reply
