  • Susan, there has been many posts on HT on how to go about this. You can do a search on the top of the page for how to do that to get to those answers. Depending upon your final goal on how you want the desk to look will depend upon what method you choose to use. There are products that will simply remove the coatings and leave behind the old stain colors, and there are more aggressive products that will remove the colors as well.

Citrus base strippers work fairly well and are much more user friendly than MEK types. What are you planning to do once this is old finish is removed?...that would steer you down the right road.

I plan on painting it with a chalk paint.

If you are painting with chalk paint then full stripping is not required. I'd just do some light sanding to give the surface some bite.

Good to know that the Citrus based strippers work well. I had watched a vid of the lady that used the Citristripper and I bought some along with the stripper pads and gloves. Hope it works as well as everyone says it does.
