I currently have those pull down stairs to a garage attic. Would like to remove those and build a set of permanent stairs. Approx 24" wide. Does anyone have ideas or plans for same ?

  • If you are handy, you can construct them on your own. But quite honestly you would be much better served and save some money and time to have pre constructed stairs delivered and just frame out opening and install them yourself. Simply measure from the top of the garage floor to the top of the attic floor and how far at the most you can run from the 1st step the the top landing and bring those measurements to your local lumber yard. They can order pre made steps made out of low cost materials and deliver them. All you need to do is frame out opening and have one or two friends help you push them up into place and nail them in. The only thing I would be concerned about is the flooring in the attic. Typically garage attics are not framed nearly as well as those supporting loads in a home. While they may be fine for storing some tires, and perhaps some old girly mags, You can overload that area quite quickly and I have seen many ceilings fail in garages because of weight. With walk up stairs it is much easier to fill the space up then with the old pull down or hatch access. So please be careful and check the framing and loads before you spend to much money on access and end up having to pay medical bills when it falls on someones head.
