The average cost will be about $20 per square to remodel an attic or finish an attic. What type of flooring will you use? What is the status of stairs? are you putting in a bathroom or bedroom? what is the plan for windows and skylights? Who will do the work? are you going to hire a contractor or do some or all of the work yourself? The average of $20 a square foot doesnt take into account these variables so instead of using a cost per square foot try the online attic finishing cost calculator at remodelormove.com. It is faster and easier than a $ per square foot estimate plus is automatically adjusted for your homes location, how much work you will do yourself, if any, the materials you will use and the size of the room http://www.remodelormove.com/finish-an-attic/

Finishing the attic is a great way to get more square footage. Check with your local Ordinance/Code Enforcement Office for building requirements and permits needed before tackling your attic conversion project. They can also give you a list of local, licensed contractors. Best of luck.

I agree with Sophia,M.,McConnery....unless you have attic space that is walled off, there is little you can do here. And if you do have walled off attic space, it may be costly to change "bracing," and such. I did see on TV a redo of a room with a slanted roof. A wall was built where the slant ended, with an opening instead of a door in the middle of the wall, allowing the window to shed light in both the closet and room. Shelves and hanging were on both sides of the new wall and outside wall. Ordinances may not let you put in a bathroom...and many now charge thousands in "impact fees" because more toilets or bedrooms mean more people.

DIY - I spent about 5000, that includes a bathroom, and all new window, laminate flooring, insulation, drywall, recessed lighting, it came out beautiful....

First you have to see if the joists and wall structures can support the load of using the attic space and meet permit requirements. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSzyxWkOPBk
