Laminate counter top and an undermount sink

Does anyone have experience with an undermount sink with a laminate top? How does it hold up? Does it leak? Any help would be appreciated. Sandy

The problem will not be the sink. Laminate tops are constructed out of a particle board with the laminate glued to the outer surface. The particle board acts like a sponge when wet. It sucks up the water and swells. Under counter sinks work very well with a solid surface top such as granite but not with laminate.

The hole that would be cut to mount the sink would expose the wood substrate and there would be no way to seal it properly. Most likely the laminate is glued to particle board and the edge would be exposed. That's why sinks on laminate counters are top mounted.

it doesn't, you need quartz or or better. there is a fiberglass type sink that can be used. check with home depot

Don't do it, it won't last. I replaced old cultured marble sinks with laminate countertops and drop-in Kohler sinks with elevated rims that I bought at build.com. Looks great, get many compliments. I have very long counters and couldn't afford quartz. I looked into the same solution you mention and decided NO!

Formica disagrees with the above answers, but I have no personal experience - looks like the laminate covers the edge: http://www.formica.com/en/us/search?SearchTer...

Amend above - they only recommend using sinks made by Karran (there is a link). But there are others. You have to look for an undermount sink that says it's for use with laminate countertops. They are only showing kitchens, so they are showing stainless steel sinks. This seems to be different than I remembered seeing before - which did show rolling the laminate down the cut edges before putting in a sink ... maybe that idea didn't work or it was another mfg.
