Fertilizer Numbers. What Do They Mean?

When buying fertilizer you will see on the bag label it’s particular formula for fertilizer NPK. N refers to Nitrogen, P refers to Phosphorous and K to Potassium. These three elements are the most important plant nutrients and are often referred to as primary macronutrients. They are necessary to the development and growth of all plants.

It's a good idea to test your soil before you start adding additional nutrients.
Phosphorous is required for seed development.
Always read and follow dilution instructions before applying any fertilizer.

    If we could convince everyone to do a soil test before they start applying things to their gardens, there would be a whole lot more happy gardens in the world.
