Jim L on Oct 19, 2016I would NOT paint nice old leather anything! Wash the leather with saddle soap and then treat the leather with a light coat of paste wax and then buff... Rather that ruin them by painting them, why not donate them to a theater for use in plays. Nice old luggage is not easy to come by. Hope that you will not paint them...Helpful Reply

Johnchip on Oct 19, 2016Total agreement with Jim L, but you can also leather dye them and use shoe polish to bring out color after cleaning them. A nice leather patina look sure would beat the look of a cheap-fix paint job that is likely to crack and peel.Helpful Reply

Karen Rae Lvine on Oct 20, 2016I would laquer them first to protect them from the weather. My choice of paint would be Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. It's fine outdoors if you leave it bare (no wax, varnish or polyurethane) AS LONG AS the piece underneath is already waterproof. The only prep you'll need is to clean (and in this case, seal) the surface. Besides the leather, this paint also covers metal, like locks and handle hardware. If they don't serve a use as suitcases anymore, my vote is to have fun repurposing them. A great idea to use them as decoration because afterwards you can store all the smaller decorations!Helpful Reply
