Making over my entryway
-
Schoener on Oct 19, 2016I'm not a fan of dark, and your entry definitely needs some brightening. Paint is an easy fix. I'd start by painting the walls a light gray, really neutral, and any color would go with it. I'd paint the woodwork and the door white. I was amazed at how bright just white woodwork and a white door lightened up my foyer. I also had those dark tiles on my floor. We removed them, and opted for a lighter floor. If that is not an option for you, try a lighter area rug to counter that dark floor. A bench would be great!Helpful Reply

Deanna Nassar on Oct 19, 2016Woodwork White gloss latex enamel. Door also enamel but maybe eggshell. Walls semi gloss pastel green like Celery. Create an area where you can drop all the things you carry in. A small bench to sit if you have to pull on or off boots or dirty shoes. Put a small table next to it for mail or other small items. A mat under it for the footware. Basket next to that for umbrellas. Put up a board above the bench with hooks for coats and caps/cup hooks for your keys. As long as everyone sticks with the idea you cut down on the "Where's my?" in the morning. As to the floor, tile can be painted too. Or get some pretty light colored peel and stick tiles.Helpful Reply

Janet Pizaro on Oct 19, 2016In my opinion painting a gray color will not brighten the area with a dark floor and door. I would consider first painting the door and once that decision is made the wall color then maybe not a bench but a slim entry way table.Helpful Reply

Sandra Hellewell on Oct 20, 2016I think if you're interested in using gray, there are very light gray colors that should look good with the black tiles. Of course, it depends on how much light you get in your entry and what exposure you have. You could try Horizon by BM or for an even lighter option, you could try Iced Cube Silver by BM and paint the trim a nice bright white like Simply White by BM or my fave Cotton Balls by BM. I would use a bench that isn't solid so it gives an open and airy feeling. A shelf with hooks for coats might look nice and I would definitely put a mirror on the wall to reflect any light and give the illusion of space. If you don't want to paint your trim, I would go with an off white or a beige such as Kilim Beige by SW, which should also look fine with your black floors. I hope this gives you some ideas. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Karen Rae Lvine on Oct 20, 2016I definitely agree with a light color for the walls and trim. I like BM Alaskan Husky, a light gray. Gloss white trim. I think the door has great potential. How about a deep red or burgundy??? And update to black hardware. There are so many things you can do with the windows in the door. There are removable peel and stick patterns, either translucent or solid, at home improvement stores. An architect at our house complimented us on the stained glass on a transom window: fake! Some look like etched glass. I see your door as mid century modern so I personally would go with a more modern etched glass design. Another option for the door windows is a spray paint that would turn them into a mirrors. Krylon makes a spray paint called Looking Glass. That would really open up the small foyer, especially since you don't have much room to hang a mirror. As far as a bench, my opinion is to skip it. It would be a bit cramped to sit there because the door swings right into the sitting space. Is there another place you can have a bench? It doesn't have to be against a wall. Sometimes a bench is an interesting room divider. A simple tall vase or other ornament in a solid color (white like the trim or white combined with the color of the door?) in the corner would break up the all those hard lines and still give you access to the switches. Then an area rug to really set it apart as an official "foyer." Good luck and I hope we get to see how it turns out!Helpful Reply

Chr12725135 on Oct 20, 2016Definitely paint the door and wood trim. That will be a huge help. The wall color can be your choice. A warm soft gray would be pretty with the white trim and black and white floorsHelpful Reply

Linnea Kuhns on Oct 20, 2016Paint the walls white and add very thin black vertical stripes spaced fairly far apart. Paint the door white too. A black and white patterned entry rug and a small bench or very narrow table and mirror to finish it up.Helpful Reply

Ram13383263 on Oct 20, 2016...like all the ideas here. Updating door hardware always great. Choose if you want to go bold or traditional with your door colors. Light to med on the wall. Thinking of adding molding around the 3 windows of the door. Build an entry table,(not much depth onto your wall...with a fold out leg, mirror, pop a metallic vase on top, warming scent, wella!Helpful Reply

Susan on Oct 20, 2016Paint walls a pale gray, door same and I would possibly scrape the grout just enough to be able to give a light gray grout coating in floor tiles.Helpful Reply

Barbara on Oct 20, 2016Paint the door and grout the same color. A color that would make the black tile pop. Perhaps a copper color. Paint the wood trim black. The walls could be a lighter shade of the door color. The door hardware in black. Don't forget the switch plates.Helpful Reply

Pauliegirl1 on Oct 20, 2016What is to the LEFT of your picture? I like ALL of the suggestions!! Do you have room on the left of your picture to add a board with hooks to hang jackets, hats etc...a wall hanging coat rack...and under that a small narrow bench....then to Right of picture, add a little, narrow table...with a shelf under it for baskets, or crates to put your other items, shoes, gloves, etc As for the floor...I like the idea of scrapping enough grout 'out' and I would use a dark gray grout to fill in....maybe you dont want a "black and white" entry way??? I like Turquoise for accent color,,,,bench cover/pillows.....with Turquoise vase, bowl?? for your entry table? Also LOVE the idea of wood trim around the windows in your door...you could even do a 'film' on the windows....they have different patterns at the big box stores...about $16-$20....very easy to install!! (I used a clearish?? color for my garage door) Good Luck and be sure to post your decisions!! LOL!!Helpful Reply

Glenda on Oct 20, 2016Your floor looks black on my screen. If you like grey, I think I'd paint the walls a light grey, the trim white, and the back of the door a mix of the white and light grey. I put a bench near my front door that has storage. I also hung a shelf with hooks over it. It's almost like a hall tree.Helpful Reply

Bernadette Staal on Oct 20, 2016I am not going to talk colours I am going to pick up on the idea of seating that you mentioned. I would incorporate in the entry way to the right of your door a custom built area where you can sit on a box that stores shoes, boots, etc. I would also have it run up the wall and have hooks for coats, dog leads, handbags, school bags etc. That way the entry becomes a functioning area.Helpful Reply

Pauliegirl1 on Oct 21, 2016What about taking yours "doors" down...off?? Clean up your closet....you could put a small table "IN" the closet, add some hooks, baskets etc...then put your bench to the R of your pic...Do you 'NEED" ALL those doors? Just a thought??Helpful Reply

Lizzy L on Oct 21, 2016If you can't clean the grout, paint it with Polyblend grout renew. A low-depth bench with storage underneath and hooks above would be cute next to the closet. If you want to update the colors, paint the walls grey and the doors and trim white.Helpful Reply
