Junk to Joy...chalk Paint or Bring Back Wood?

Question

our neighbors were wheeling this beauty to the trash and my wonderful hubby waited for them to go back in...(heaven forbid that he admits he loves to junk...err up cycle). Anywhoooo, now we have this in a pile of 'to-dos'. What do you think? It's marked on back from Pennsylvania but veneer is peeling...HELP! Thank you all!

Love this piece. It would look beautiful sanded and stained if you want to put the time into it. Chalk paint would look just as nice too. It all depends on what style goes best where you wan to put this beauty.

Thanks ladies!  I think with it being so old, this will be a restoring project.  New for me with veneer and details...chalk paint is so easy to hide flaws but I do love this piece and yes I am amazed that this was considered to be trash!!!!!   I will document progress.  Wish me luck!  :)

I agree with restoring it! It's good practice if you haven't done it before and it was free so you don't have a big investment in it. If it doesn't turn out you can always paint over it and I'm sure that would look great too!

I would glue down veneer where you can and fill in missing parts with wood fill. Then paint it in chalk paint will be gorgeous!! Good luck!

WOOD!!! strip it, and then light color stain, then wax. I think painting will take away from the beauty of the wood.

Just finished a piece, very similar. The veneer was in bad shape. I did my best to save it...but no luck. Ended up painting. Tell the Hubs the best stuff is always free and waiting for 'redemption' from the dumpster. My hubby came home with 3 amazing chairs this week all saved from the jaws of the garbage truck! Good Luck. My brother-in-law came upon a bureau in which the veneer was in very bad shape so he took it all off and was left with decent wood underneath. So he stained it up and it came out great. He warned me that sometimes the wood underneath can be made of mismatched scraps and may even have knot holes. He would have re-veneered the piece had that been the case.
