What is milk paint?

Pat Dollar on Oct 05, 2013Milk paint is a nontoxic water-based mixture used as a paint It is made from milk and lime with or without pigments added for color. Borax may be added to the milk paint recipe to assist the lime in dissolving the casein and as a preservative.Though milk paint has been used for thousands of years it does not compete commercially with oil paint mostly due to its short shelf life. Milk paint will spoil and must be used within a day or a little longer if refrigerated. Milk paint can be used to mimic the look of antique furniture. You can make your own milk paint at home. Pat Dollar on Oct 05, 2013Chalk Paint® is different. It is not paint with chalk added to it. It is not chalkboard paint. It is not made by adding plaster of Paris or grout or even baking soda to an existing paint. Chalk Paint® is the unique decorative paint developed by Anne Sloan for furniture, floors and walls, drawing on a lifetime of research and experience in working with paint and color.Helpful Reply

Susan on Oct 07, 2013Milk paint has to be used quickly? It won't spoil while drying on furniture? It gives furniture an antique look, as in cracked or lines? Thank you so much for your help.Helpful Reply

Pat Dollar on Oct 08, 2013@Susan Yes, you have to use it quickly but it does not spoil once applied to your surface just as you would not see any spoilage with a few drops of milk left in a glass bottom where it simply evaporates somewhat and solidifies.Helpful Reply
