Our little patch of paradise is now all decked for autumn in its fall finery. Native plants are key for color here in our sandy, droughty and often challenging growing conditions, This is probably the prettiest time of year here in SW Michigan and in our yard. For lots more photographs and a "Color Tour" go to our blog at http://smallhouseunderabigsky.wordpress.com/2013/10/05/fall-finery-at-the-small-house/
Our native Oak Leaf Hydrangea in it lovely purple and green colors of autumn.
Ornamental grasses are the bones for this corner bed nestled up against the pool house.
Stacked firewood and native Sassafras and wild Dogwoods lend beauty to the side meadow.
The oranges and yellow of the wild Sassafras make the back boarder sing!

Does the oak leaf live well in Zone 4 South Dak?

@Bobbie larsen I'm afraid it would be too cold for oak leaf where you are. They are generally listed as a zone 5 plant, but where I gardened in the Hudson Valley of New York, which was zone 5, they were only hardy in protected spots.

I goggled who listed a red oak as being viable in SD. Good luck!
