Dried glue on flooring - Help!

Shawna Bailey on Oct 25, 2016I know this sounds kind of weird but have you tried peanut butter ? The oils in it really get under sticky things and helps get them off. I've never used it to get up a rug backing, but I have successfully used on similar things and it won't harm the floor. Try it in a small area by putting a glob down and letting it sit for at least half an hour, if not longer.Helpful Reply

Janet Pizaro on Oct 25, 2016Try anything with an oily substance. Mayo, peanut butter,oil,WD40. Rub in and leave on long enough to soften the glue then scrape off.Helpful Reply

Johnchip on Oct 25, 2016You might also try a low heat setting on a hair blow dryer to soften, then scrape.Helpful Reply

Krystyna llenza on Oct 26, 2016How about mineral spirits? I don't know if it will work on the wood and not strip the color but it's worth a try. I have used it on ceramic tile to remove some type of shellac/glue construction workers left on my tile floor.Helpful Reply

Nancy Sigmon on Oct 26, 2016Thanks I'll try that too. It's also on tile in a bathroom, and in both places it's dried hard, not sticky at all. So maybe one of these things will loosen it up and I can get it off the floor. Going to the house tomorrow so will try everything and see what works. Thanks!Helpful Reply

Mike on Oct 28, 2016I'd stick to things that contain natural oils first and do five the some time to sink in before trying to remove the glue. For me WD 40 would be my last choice as it does dry out and may leave a stain.Helpful Reply

Thr8342114 on Oct 30, 2016Believe it or not, I had great luck getting the adhesive off a floor with Downy fabric softener. Apply full strength (you can use a brush, spray bottle or whatever works for you) and let sit until you can scrape off the offending glue. I even use a metal mitchen spatula for scraping as it is small and easy to control. This method is cheap (cost of Downy) and quite easy, relatively speakingHelpful Reply

Nancy Sigmon on Oct 30, 2016Thanks I'll give Downy a try. Couldn't hurt the wood finish. Same glue is on tile flooring the bathroom and I was able to get it up with acetone and a scraper, it don't want to try this on wood.Helpful Reply

Nancy Sigmon on Nov 03, 2016Before n after pics - fabric softener did the job, didnt harm the wood finish and smelled pretty good too. I used acetone on the same glue that was on tile and used a metal scraper tool on both after softening. Thanks for your great suggestions!Helpful Reply
