This is in Northwest PA, it's a bush..not a tree. Fruit is multiple shapes...very hard...no fuzz.

That looks like a snowberry. Although Im not sure they have thorns per se. But they arent a quince. Quinces are a much larger fruit like a small apple. If it is a snowberry then it is inedible and toxic to people. Even handling the berries can produce an allergic reaction. Please consult a local arborist or naturalist to be sure. But please handle with care until you are sure what it is.

@Jamie Hibbs No, not Snowberry...I have Snowberry in my front yard & it's more like a ground cover...doesn't grow more than a foot high, has pale pink flowers & no thorns. This is a bush with thorns & has red/ fuchsia colored flowers.

Looks like a flowering quince. The Japanese quince looks pretty much the same. The quince tree grows into a taller tree and fruit is extremely hard. We never used the flowering quince for jelly, but we did use the fruit from the larger quince tree. Google each of the three and see which one your blooms in spring look like.
  • Looks like quince to me. A bunch of quince in a bowl on the table in a sunny room give off quite a lovely smell. Lovely for thanks giving decorations. Jelly is good too. Just need a LOT of sugar. ;)

I have this bush in my yard as well and I had no idea what it was! We just noticed the fruit last week and we were totally stumped. Looks like quince is the answer - thank you for posting!
  • Definitely a quince - I have two in my garden. They are gorgeous in the spring when they are covered in dark salmon flowers (could also be white on yours).

@Heather (New House New Home) I've never seen white Quince flowers! I used to have smaller Quince bushes with pale salmon colored blossoms but around here the common Flowering Quince has the magenta blooms in Spring. I have one in my yard & the birds love to nest in it.
