How to Make a Wall Lamp (sconce)

I just couldn't find inexpensive plug-in wall sconces that I liked so I decided to make my own, using just a drill and some hand tools. And you won't believe what I used to make the shades !

I used 1 package of 3/4" iron-on wood edging.

I cut it into strips, and glued them (with a hot iron) onto an embroidery hoop cut in half and then weaved them together.

I drilled holes at the end of the strips to secure pieces of corner guards using brads. The corner guards are used to connect the shade to the base.

For the base of the lamp, I used a piece of 12"x12" sheet metal from the hardware store and cut out the shape of the base with metal snips and pierced the slots for the lamp kit using a hammer and a chisel. I used this lamp kit from amazon.

The last step is to attach the base of the lamp to the shade with more brads.

The nice thing about these lamps is that you can customize the shades and change them up to match your decor. Not bad for under $25! I put together this kit that has all the things you need to make these sconces to make it easier if you wan to make your own.

There's a very detailed resource guide and a video on my blog which shows every step in great detail on how to make this lamp, and it also includes how to make another type of shade.
