How to refinish a beat up laminate top desk?

William on Oct 27, 2016No need to remove the laminate. You don't know what is underneath. Any knicks and dents can be filled in with a wood filler or auto body filler. Lightly sand the the top to remove any shine. Prime with KILZ, BIN. or Zinsser primer, then paint with an acrylic paint.Helpful Reply

Jean Schmidt Tieche on Oct 27, 2016I agree with William. I recently did this using Zinsser primer followed by 2 coats of Annie Sloan chalk paint in Graphite. I wanted a durable top and a dark color, so I used a glaze with black latex paint followed by 4 coats of Polyacrylic. (The base was ASCP in French Linen with 2 coats of Polyacrylic.) My son has the piece in his family room for use with his young children.Helpful Reply

Patty on Oct 27, 2016William is right, no need to remove laminate. Follow William's instructions and it will be beautiful. Just remember to let each coat dry well before moving on to the next coat, a lot of people get impatient and end up with a tacky mess.Helpful Reply

Country Design Home on Oct 28, 2016Hi Elaine! My only addition to the answers above would be to make sure the laminate is affixed securely to the wood below. If not, you will need to glue and clamp it back down. If you use chalk paint, you can skip the primer step and just paint, then add a wax or poly finish. (I use poly for most desk or dresser tops- I feel like it is more durable than wax)Helpful Reply

B J Alexis on Oct 28, 2016I agree, no need to remove the laminate, sand and use primer, maybe even two light coats, before the final color is painted. Chalk paint may not require the primer coat.Helpful Reply
