What Style is This Called?

We picked up an old drop front desk recently but I know nothing about this style or what the wood is. Is it walnut? (I don't think it's oak). Where would I look for more info on this pretty piece? The carving is amazing and very pretty. Is it Swedish by chance? The dark color tells me no, but the seller (Craigslist), said he thought it was Swedish, and from the 1800's, Hard to confirm anything though.

Elaine Phillips on Oct 14, 2013Thanks for the info/help, everyone. Kathleen63, that desk on Ebay is cool but the carving on the camphor desk looks crude in comparison to the carving on the desk that we picked up. Ours isn't carved deeply carved like that...maybe just 1/4" deep? There isn't a lot of dimension on ours, but details are more refined. My grandpa used to have an old bar/chest for his liquor similar to the one you found. It was sort of like this one: http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/10236217 but the corners in front opened as well and held his special 'shot glass' collection like this style http://capetown.olx.co.za/chinese-vintage-liquor-cabinet-with-elaborate-carving-iid-479485304# Wow, what a trip down memory lane thinking about that chest and seeing those! (and a bit off topic) When I'm able to get around better I will try to get a good picture - I had foot surgery last week and need to stay off my feet for a while. Also, the seller from Craigslist replied to my text - he confirmed it is walnut but said doesn't know if it's Swedish - the family who had it shipped here was Swedish - not necessarily the item. The true color is a very dark brown - the lamps that I put nearby made it look more golden than it actually is.
