Vintage Cast Iron Bed

We've dubbed this 'The Princess and the Pea' bed. The frame sits so high and when adding modern mattresses - the total height is 3 feet. My neighbor suggests a small step. Charming. What would you do?

I have an old iron bed, and in order for it to be easy for my guests to use it, I purchased a LOW PROFILE box spring (it is at least half the size of a typical box spring) and then a regular mattress. My teenage daughter now uses it and loves it!
