I had a similar scenario in a house we bought 4 years ago. I wiped all trim, baseboard and door surfaces down with a "liquid sandpaper"/deglosser product, applied a couple coats of latex bonding primer and then a couple coats of white latex semi-gloss paint. It felt like I painted about a million miles of baseboards and trim molding (and there are 13 doors in the house) but it was soooooooo worth all the effort when it was done. Painting all that wood made everything look so bright, fresh and clean. So the short answer to your question is yes, latex is fine. ***Be prepared to hear from a bunch of people who are going to give you grief about even thinking about painting 50 year old mahogany. ;)

I've been painting for 22 years and I would degloss, then use an oil based primer, followed by a latex/acrylic paint. If you have to go to the trouble of priming anyway....why risk it?

Thanks! I will use a oil based primer.

I've always read that if you are going to use an oil base paint, you should use an oil based primer. Latex is water based and usually doesn't mix well with oil based paint.

You're PAINTING MAHOGANY????? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Sorry, I always react that way when I see beautiful woodwork painted....... **sigh**
  • Lightly sand with 120 grit paper, wipe with deglosser to remove contaminants apply Bins ,killz or zinzer oil base primer all found at lowes. Then use oil base for a finish or High qualiity latex enamel. This will take 3 coats If the finish is other than white tint your primer. Caulk and putty after the first coat. Marvel at the results!

clean with degreaser like krud kutter. Definitely a coat or two of a good stain blocker oil primer and then use behr primer and one or glidden duo primer in one enamel paint. Works great! To the comment above. You definitely wouldn't use a regular paint over an oil paint, it would peel right off, but you can use latex over a oil primer no problem.

Michelle, I agree that an oil based primer is best - especially over mahogany. I recently painted a large amount of woodwork with Benjamin Moore Advanced paint (in high gloss - gorgeous) and was VERY VERY pleased with the results. It costs a bit more but was so easy to work with and provided really really nice results. Their satin finish is also pretty great!

Why would you paint a beautiful wood like this?

I agree, mahagony wood? 0MG!! I would never paint that. Just refinish the wood. It would take the same effort as painting.
