I want to make valences out of muslin

I would like simple ideas to stencil or paint on fabric, something simple. Since I am rather eclectic and my rooms have different decor. Maybe something oriental for my bedroom. A bit southwestern for my living room. Since my living room opens to my kitchen and front door and both have windows I don't know how to blend all the rooms into one design or make coordinating designs. I want to have a little something over the blinds to soften the look. Thanks!

I used painters' fabric drop cloth - very inexpensive - and fabric spray paint. Took a crochet doily and laid it on the cloth as a stencil. Angle or straight, partial or full. You could also use a scallop or diamond shaped stencil for a border that used your room's accent color. Zip! You're done.

find a pattern you like and trace it with transfer pencil and then just iron on the pattern

The only suggestion I have is to be sure to wash and dry your muslin prior to use. Do not use any fabric softener or fabric sheets; that will come after your drawing or painting, which I am not an expert. Just be sure ALL the sizing is washed out of the fabric. I perhaps would purchase some binding, braiding which co-ordinated with my room design and either glue or sew it on. Many years ago I did curtains out of muslin with scallops at the top. It was labor intensive because you have to blind stitch it. Then I used hand sewn little round rings at the point of each scallop. I hope that helped. Just be sure to wash that muslin and NO FABRIC SOFTENER before addition of painting.

Wash and dry Muslin, paint in a well ventilated area, use a design you like and have fun

I would caution you do not 'overkill' by using the same fabric or technique in all your rooms, it cheapens the effect.
