Here's another one that needs some serious help.

I really, really don't want to trash this one. This buffet was in a screen room on a porch for many years until I drug it home. The inside, back and dividers are completely trashed. Any suggestions? I'm thinking to build a large box and just slide it in?

This would make an amazing bathroom sink cabinet. Just put shelves where the two drawers used to be, the top area would be there for the pipes and the bottom for towels, etc. Fix the right side up, put a dark stain on the whole thing, drop a sink in the top and it would be amazing. Either that or just make the middle a book case/shelving for any room. I agree with you though, it deserves some love.

@Naomi Grace at Pieces of Grace Restyling great find, but a challenging rescue. You have done a great job of stripping down so far. How do you want to use the piece? The vanity idea suggested by @Diane is a good one and maybe easier to accomplish. If you want to use it as a cabinet, you could make shelves where the drawers used to be by nailing some boards across the drawer supports and then using the same type of boards on each side - stain and or paint. @Jasmin did an amazing repurpose of a dresser that may also interest you - http://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/dressers/cat-condo-from-destroyed-dresser-re-purrrr-posed-feline-heaven-672426 So I guess it all comes down to how you want to use the piece in the future. Do update us with pics of what you decide to do - I love to see people's creativiry and success. Thanks for posting :)
    • @Gail Salminen yep this is a challenging one..The drawer supports are gone, as is the whole back, so I'm more or less reconstructing the back and sides and bottom. Frame and top are good. I'm liking the sink idea. I'll be selling her so won't be keeping. Thanks for the link

Those are the best ones! Im working on a dressing table/ vanity that was in a barn for at least 50 years. No top on it, no mirrors in the frames, but Im almost done stripping off all the old paint and ready to have the mirrors put in and hubby will make the table top for it. I only spent 5 bucks on it. Ive seen them go for hundreds when restored.

I like the sink & counter idea, too. Or maybe a nice tv stand, or cut the legs down a bit and turn it into a desk or a potting table...

put rectangular baskets (natural color) in place of the drawers and sand the buffet and paint it bright white

This could be used for anything. One thing for sure, it is the right depth dimensions to sit on a wall but not crowd out into the room. Think about storage. Take off all the doors and all the damaged plywood that looks like it is waffling, add bracing for shelves at the very bottom and then add pretty baskets. In other words, use just the frame and top. Paint it any color that goes with your decor. I happen to love a cranberry red for an accent color.

I would give the buffet a new back, and where the drawers used to be just put new wood with a nice veneer layer, and on the sides as well where there is wood missing.. Then after the sheets are in, put a trim in front to cover the raw edge of the wood. I can't tell if your buffet is veneer or solid wood, but I wood sand it down if not too damaged, and then apply a stain of your choice or leave it natural. In the end I would install two new silver tone pulls for the doors. If your buffet is really beat up then I would prime, paint, and maybe stencil a colour and pattern of your choice. I refinish many pieces of furniture, and lately I have been into dark brown espresso water based stain. The I use a couple coats of oil based urethane. There are so many ways you could transform your buffet. The sink idea would work too, but you need room for the pumping so I would put on false looking drawer fronts with nice handles to go with the doors. Either way let us know what you decided. I can't wait to see the transformation. Have fun.

Sweet piece! It has nice clean lines. Love the doors also...I think they are keepers. It has the option for open storage/baskets/shelves/plumbing or anything else in the middle. Glad that you rescued it

I had one like this that was water damaged. I replaced the sides with plywood, and peeled the veneer off. We added wood to the drawers to slide. Or one piece. It's a beautiful piece. It is worth saving. Maybe where the drawers were you could ad plywood and ad a basket drawer, this would update it and keep its charm.
    • @Sherrie , Hi! thanks for the encouragement. This piece has been staring at me for months! Got a pretty good plan for it now. Will be doing as you said except leaving the drawers section completely open with only a back. The other side which is still in good shape is actually a thick luwan, I have some cedar I may use...decisions, decisions.

It will be stunning! I can't wait! Like you sometimes I stick stuff back until I can either figure it out. I can't wait to see it when your finished.

You could put on a back if wanted and then shelves where drawers used to be Re-stain or paint. Then you could use baskets (wood, wire, metal, woven whatever on the shelves to hold items). Or build new drawers for it. And the drawer or shelf supports would not be hard to re-do since ruined.if you don't put a back on and used it as say an island you could have baskets for both sides of it for storage. Be sure and post pictures here when you finish it :). you could also remove the door on 1 end (or even both ends) again put in shelves and use them for display or more storage. Door could then be re- purposed into a sign, picture or chalkboard.
