JoshuaandAmber Morris on Oct 26, 2013Hello Bonnie:). In regards to your question about cutting back your flowers. You really should, I live in Florida, I love my flower garden, as do I our vegetable garden. We do have a fall here in Old Town, small town. Anyways, enough rambling!. You will not be disappointed with the results, meaning a larger volume of blooms/ healthier.Helpful Reply

Linda on Oct 26, 2013I always cut my butterfly bushes in late winter. I cut them back to knee high height. They grow and flower on the new wood. If you don't cut them back they get very woody and they look shabby. The branches also break easy in the wind. I cut back my perennials back in October and leave a few cone flower seed heads for the birds to enjoy in winter.Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Oct 27, 2013Cutting back perennials is somewhat a matter of preference, although many have seed heads that will fuel the birds and have a nice structure that adds winter interest to the garden. But I would definitely encourage you not to cut back that butterfly bush until early spring. They will make it through the winter much better if you do not cut them back now. When I worked at a nursery in New York and someone came in with a dead butterfly bush in the spring the first question we asked was when they cut it back.Helpful Reply
