Ground cover

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Oct 29, 2013What are you trying to accomplish? Mondo grass will take a while to fill in. Do you just want green? I would suggest Liriope because it will spread fast, grows about 6-8" tall, no maintenance and you can find it sometimes on Craiglist for free. Groundcovers are usually invasive and they will choke out weeds and other plants. Creeping Jenny, St. Johns Wort, and even certain flowers will fill in an area. there are many plants that will fill in the area but it depends if you want green or flowers.Helpful Reply

Karen B on Oct 29, 2013my daughter has a place at end of her driveway in sun that she just wants green. Its about four sq ft in a triangle shape. I was thinking mondo because is grows low to ground and resembles grass, but I'm concerned about hot sun.Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Oct 30, 2013I think you are correct about not planting mondo in the full sun. What about a mix of perennials such as Dianthus, Sedums, Leadwort, Phlox and Candytuft? Those are all hardy for full sun, different bloom times, all low growing, most stay year round.Helpful Reply

Bonny McDaniel on Oct 30, 2013I usually use an ice plant in areas like that. Most forms love hot sun and get along with cold weather, too.Helpful Reply

Mikell Paulson on Oct 31, 2013How about thyme? I use this in areas that is rocky and nothing else will grow there! I can walk on it and once a year it gives me beautiful ruby red flowers, looks like a carpet and spreads nice!Helpful Reply

Claudia on Oct 31, 2013I agree with planting one of the low growing thymes. Dwarf mondo does well in shade - frequently replacing grass under mature trees where grass has died out. It's beautiful mowed or natural.Helpful Reply
