We’re about to blow your mind. Are you ready? Closets shouldn’t be used for storage.*
That’s right! Your closet will serve you much better (and stay far more organized) if it has a more specific function than just being a place for your stuff. Here’s the secret to a clutter-free closet:Step Give Your Closet a Goal
Each of your closets should have one specific purpose. Instead of thinking of your closets as storage, consider their individual roles and optimize accordingly. So, your bedroom closet is there to simplify the dressing process. Your front hall closet is there to make finding a coat easier. So on and so on.
Tip: Add extra gadgets and storage tools to help the closet do its “job.” Need to store a bunch of shirts and dresses? Add an extra hanging rod. Got a lot of odds-and-ends that you remove frequently? Install some hooks on your door and use them for easy access!Step Fire the Losers
Any closeted item that doesn’t fulfill the specified goal is a loser (like that tennis racket in your bedroom closet). Do a quick audit of each closet’s belongings. Is there anything you can toss? If you’re cleaning a bedroom closet, get rid of anything that hasn’t been worn in a year. For toy closets or coat closets, if a year has passed since an item’s been touched, it should go, too.
*There is an exception to this rule, and it’s called a storage/utility closet. However, just because your closet's “goal” is storage doesn’t mean you should cram junk in there with impunity. Read some tips on utility closet organization!
