I have a wallpaper boarder around the top of the wall by the ceiling. Do you have an easy way to take this off or is there a paint that I can paint over it?

pour a cup of liquid fabric softener in a bucket of warm water, soak a sponge in it, then apply to the border. Wait a few minutes, then it should scrape off easily.

I use a 50/50 mix hot water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Cheaper then fabric softener.

It has removed wallpaper that has been up 20+ years. I have been in my home for twenty two years. The previous owners loved wallpaper. I removed all the wallpaper using this mixture. The vinegar cuts into the adhesive. Scrape off with a putty knife. I have had wallpaper come off in sheets.

It all depends on the adhesive used on the border. Border may be soaked and softened by any means shown. May come off in layers. If the liner is stuck fast, the paste may be very difficult to remove cleanly. In the past I have seen wallpaper and borders that were adhered with something like "Elmer's"! DIY probably. Hopefully you can get it off without damaging the wallboard.

Zyou can buy a product from any hardware or paint stre soecificall designed to remove wallpaper. You spray the paper, let sit for a few mnutes and it works like a charm.

After you get the wallpaper off with any of the above methods (I have done both the vinegar and fabric softener) both work fine. If you end upremoving any of the sheet rock, you can roll premixed drywall mud on the walls before painting. Then sand, prime and paint. Works like a charm.

My painter actually painted over the kitchen border with no problem. Using primer, then quality paint. Has lasted several years. No peeling, no one knows or can see it, even standing up to heat.

Life is not easy......why is everyone always looking for an easy way to do things. To accomplish a project that you can feel good about when finished it takes work and elbow grease. (Just a midwestern term). Please, do not paint over the border. It is easy to remove by soaking it with vinegar & water or fabric softener. But, first you have to scratch the top layer of vinyl with a serarated knife or anything that will let moisture get to that back to soften the glue so you can peel it off And scrape off the glue so you can wash and wash and wash it clean of glue .....so you can then paint...Happy Stripping!!

Half warm water Half vinegar and spray on and leave it on there to soak it and scrape it with scraper. I had a wallpaper boarder and this is what I did to get mine off and it worked for me. Good Luck.

I buy a big sponge to use over the vinegar as wet as I can without dripping as much as possible & I put my vinegar in the microwave as often as needed to keep it hot as I can .This is the best way I found & I've taken off plenty.Good luck.

50/50 Hot water, fabric softener. It's non toxic, smells great, won't discolor flooring or carpeting, and really, really, works! I've used this for many years and find it the best method. When done, I wash the walls with just hot water to remove any glue or adhesive residue left behind. Best of luck.

You can paint over wall paper but it may loosen up or peel depending on how it was applied. It is a bit of work but removing it has always been my choice.

Do you have access to a steamer? Works magic removing wall paper among a million other things.

I have an older model of this

Hot water in a spray bottle. Do a section at a time. Spray, wait 30 minutes, spray again, wait 30 minutes, and then one more time. (watch a 30 minute sitcom in between). Then spray again and start to pull the paper from the bottom up and it should come right off. I did 3 rooms this way. No vinegar, no fabric softener, and no steamer. Takes time but it works. To wash off the remaining glue, take a broom dipped in hot water and loosen the glue. This will lift it off the wall. Once done, wash the walls with Mr. Clean or mild dish soap until clean. Good luck!

since it's only a border it would be best to remove it. Even if you paint you will still see the bottom edge of the border and I don't think you'd be happy seeing that.

I use a sponge dipped in either fabric softener and water mixture or vinegar water mixture. Make sure you score the wallpaper first so the water soaks in under the wallpaper for easy removal.

Looking at it from the perspective of someone who has removed a lot of wallpaper, both correctly applied and not, please do not paint over it. It looks bad and when you get tired of looking at the line of wallpaper under the paint, it is 10 times worse to remove if it has paint over it. You can buy a tool at any home improvement store that wil puncture the paper without damaging the wallboard. Then use hot tap water, with or without starch and let soak for a few minutes. I use a wide 6-8" putty knife and slide it under an edge of paper and start scraping. If wall was prepared properly when paper was installed, it should come right off.

Don't paint over wallpaper, it looks terrible! Changing all of mine

  • Carol C Carol C on Feb 19, 2017

    1. Score the border very well.

    2. Spray with hot water or straight Awesome (1.00 at the dollar stores)

    3. Wait 5-10 minutes......should come off easily. I use an old metal spatula as a scraping tool.

    Good luck!
