You can paint upon that wood or else do designs with decoration materials
The space you are talking about is above the window or is there a loft on the other side your talking about ? I think keep loft . Make for reading arts crafts . make box steps to grt to it and have storage in the steps !
I would get blue curtains to match the side wall or at least add accessory to the curtain with color. Possibly paint cross beams to the loft blue also to tie a theme together of blue and natural wood.
This "floor" on top of your ceiling looks more like an afterthought to acquire more (but useless) storage space. Time to purge anything you haven't used in over a year. Remove the wood and paint the room (including the window wall) a light color. I would leave the beams as is and decide later if you want to paint them. If you decide to paint the beams, think a light distressed look.
