@Grannylannie, that is a balloon flower (common name). Very pretty! The only problem I had with it was the slugs liked to get into them. Official name: Platycodon grandiflorus - a species of herbaceous flowering perennial plant of the family Campanulaceae, and the only member of its genus.

I'll ditto what @Rita C. - Panoply said. I think they're beautiful, but for some reason I've never had one come back for the second year. I can grow lots of flowers, but just can't grow these :(

  • Yes, balloon flowers. Get their name from the way the buds puff up like balloons. Love them and the colour too, but never had a lot of luck with them hanging around after one or two seasons.
  • Debora Debora on Nov 03, 2013
Platycodon, or purple balloon flower. They are perennials, but can be slow to break dormancy in the spring. When they are about 18" high, cut them back about half and you will get more flowers. After they finish blooming, cut them back again , but not as drastically, and they will bloom again in late summer/early fall. They spread like crazy, so plant them where you won't mind having more!

For those who have similar flowers that bloom every year, could those be bell flowers instead of balloon flowers? The flowers look similar to me. Caveat, I am a new gardener, but I've been looking at a LOT of flower catalogs and websites. and I have fallen in love with both the balloon flower and the bell flower.

It is a balloon flower. They come in blue, white and pink. They are also a perennial but come up a bit late in the season so you may want to mark where it is. Cut it back to nearly the ground when dormant. Bees love them! They come in tall and dwarf varieties. When dead-heading they have a white sap that is very sticky.
  • Sue Sue on Nov 05, 2013

The little balloons start to crack open and a bee will get inside.. then the bee moves around and the balloon bounces around... my boys always got a kick out of them... If you "ping" them with your fingers just right, the bee flys out & the flower semi opens... Luckily they never got stung! Mine grew like weeds... They are beautiful...
  • Balloon Flower.Have them also
  • Suzette Trimmer Suzette Trimmer on Feb 08, 2014
Here in zone 6, South eastern PA they are often refereed to as Balloon Flower as said either but also Bell flowers also.Depending on the nursery. Most are in shades of blue but have also seen and grown the ore delicate pink variety as well. Hardy perennials, that require good winter insulation after first season of planting.
  • Denise Denise on Feb 08, 2014
They seem to have several names bell, balloon or star flowers. I live in Oklahoma and it says to plant in part sun to shade. But, knowing how hot our weather gets, I planted mine in the shade and they've come back ever year. Last year I saw a lady buying a couple of plants, she had planted her's in the sun and they had died so she was going to try again. After telling her I had planted mine in the shade and had them for years she was going to try that. What I have learned about plants that they do not tell us when we are buying plants, the instructions on how to plants, the climate conditions, etc pertain to the area the plant was shipped from. (or grown) Therefore, the beautiful plants we buy from California has a whole different sun, temperature than where I live. So, when it says sun to part shade I always opt for the shade.
    • Diane Coakley Diane Coakley on Apr 03, 2014
@Denise thanks so much for letting us know that they will thrive in the shade. I have a very heavily shaded front yard and am wanting to put alot of color in the beds. I've always loved this plant but didn't know it would live in the shade!
