Any of you that are following along this journey with me know that I do stain painted furniture art. I use stain as my medium to create the artwork on discarded and/ or unloved pieces of furniture.
When I first started this technique, I was creating the artwork on raw wood. Here are some of those pieces:
After awhile, I decided I wanted a white or lightly painted background for the artwork. I came across a photo and knew this was the color I wanted for my next piece.
After doing some research, I found this was done by Kellie Smith - the creator of Velvet Finishes paints. We did some emailing back and forth and I wasn't sure that the stain would adhere to the paint - and Kellie wasn't sure either - but I decided to give it a try. IT WORKED! And I was (and still AM) hooked on Velvet Finishes!!
I still continue to do the stained artwork on raw surfaces, but I have been toying with the idea of adding color to the actual art - not just the background. I kept dragging my feet, as I just wasn't sure how it would turn out.
I scuffed the surface and used Velvet Finishes "Ready", which is a spray to use prior to painting. It takes off the sheen of the surface and allows the paint to adhere.
Now, I tried to just block out the idea that there was color there and go about my staining as I normally do
I sealed it with several coats of General Finishes High Performance Top Coat and got her staged and ready to be adored
Velvet Finishes has a Colour of the Month. This month is November. You can click the link at the bottom to get to her site and use the code NOV16COM to receive 20% off of Soulful!
I didn't want to love this added element of color to my artwork, but guess what?! ~~ I DO!!

Linda Koskinen on Nov 24, 2016This is beautiful! I would like to do this, but I could never do the painting myself. Where would I go for transfers like this?
