Generally the inside of fireboxes are black from soot and smoke.
A lighter color will definitely brighten the area and allow your decor to be seen easier. However, if this is still a functioning fireplace (even if you don't use it) be sure to use a paint that is rated for fireplace use. This will be much safer should you decide to start using the fireplace again or for the next homeowner who may not know what type of paint was used.
Get a sheet of aluminum and have it cut to fit the sides and back. You could paint it a metallic color to reflect more light. Or a sheet of copper cut the same way and not painted. Let it weather over time or you could age it some way. It would look great and reflect very well.
Using fire proof paint, create a soot appearance on a cream background.
Lighter paint would work but I just bought framed mirrors at the thrift store and stood them against the walls. Added large pillar candles on metal stands.....the mirrors reflect the light.
This issue is solved. Due to continual, drastic lighting problems the fireplace area will be repurposed. Thank you.
If as you say you are not going to use it anymore why not paint the fire box white and fill with candles that are different heights?
I suggest a brushed gold color and replace the log holder with a multi tier candle holder with those wide battery run candles. It would give you the lighting and ambiance your looking for.
I was thinking of a nice copper color!
