How do you choose when to paint or when to restore?? What is the deciding factor?? Is it age, cost, or if it will sell or not?

Look at the inside and the underside. Do the woods match? If not, paint, if they do restore.

Hi. I am unemployed and want to start paint and restoring pieces. I LOVE DIYing and crafting. I do not know how to price my work. Will you help me? Please let me know what to consider as I take on this endeavor. Thanks

@Royalty I have heard that a good formula is 3 x the cost of materials plus $20/hr for your time.

That is probably a good formula Pat, but would only work in certain parts of the country. Back in Iowa, I never would have gotten that much out of a piece of furniture. But it is worth a try.

I use $20 an hour plus supplies. Of course a big factor is the quality of the piece that you are starting with, some pieces warrant a higher price tag.

I think it depends on how much damage and repair that need done. Also are you selling the dresser in the picture.? I had one like it but lost it in a house fire. I would love to have another one like it...

When it comes to pricing for me it was the hardest thing to learn! I started off way under pricing my work and was told by another painter that I was undervaluing my self and other painters in my town. I was having fun and thought it's ok just to make a couple bucks on each piece lol well let's just say I had to turn that around quick! Furniture, paint, and hardware isn't cheap! Look at it this way... Your customer is getting a piece of artwork. A custom piece for their home... If they were getting a dress customized and made especially for them...would that be cheap?

@Vintage Pink Do you still have that dresser in the picture? Your about 6 &1/2 hrs from me--Road Trip if price is right :) My ex mother-in-law had a store years ago, and we used to go to auctions and yard sales to find different/old/odd items. Clean them, repair/paint them, then pricing was the hardest...live in a very small town-no one had much money. Some items we took back to the auctions and sold.

Look at other similar pieces in your selling area first. Start at the highest possible and then you can afford to go down and not lose. Most people expect to haggle on restored or repurposed piece.
