How small do you mean? A good compost bin needs enough volume for it to heat up and work. I would not build anything smaller than what you find commercially like in Costco or Sams or you may be disappointed in the results. Good luck! I have been composting for over 30 years and it is very beneficial to incorporate this into the soil, and to utilize yard waste instead of sending to the dump.

Our county offers free compost bin that you roll out into a circle and it has holes in it. You should find out if they offer in your state, or just buy one.

Whatever you put into a compost holder, it will be light, but when it becomes magic black gold soil, it gets heavy...however, I do have an idea for you using pallets...base pallet, screw in 4 heavy duty wheels...sides, attach with screws on 3 sides...4th side attach with recycled door hinges for easy removal by shovel of the finished compost....lid can be another pallet which can be slid off, if necessary but will keep critters out...the open slats in the skids allow for air flow, bacteria cycles to break down the contents - rain water or a pail of water now and then to keep things barely moist.....if you get that far, and it is just an idea...you must move the contents around...I have found in my life, tossing in cheap fertilizer 7-7-7 heats things up...and get the job done a bit faster.. the overall measurements will be your choice as pallets are very easy to trim down.....Roz

Buy a couple of 5 gallon buckets with screw on lids or small garbage pails with lids, Easily moved. Fill one, set aside in the sun to work it's magic & work on filling the other. ( if you use the garbage cans you may have to set a rock on them to keep varmits out). Good luck
