Making the Most of Grocery Store Flowers

I have never really been a flower person.
Mostly because no one (ahem, ahem) ever bought them for me.
Revelation: I can buy flowers for myself!
The other day while I was in the grocery store picking up a few odds and ends, I stopped to check out the flower selection and because I didn’t want to spend a whole lot on flowers, I picked up these mini carnations.

Carnations are the best cut flower for longevity, however the miniature ones will last even longer. Lovely display.

Next time you happen to be at Walmart or Hobby Lobby pick up wet oasis. This will allow you to add height to your arrangements and not have to worry about having so much water in your containers. First, soak your oasis in water. Rule of thumb is to cut the oasis about an inch above your container, cover it with greenery, then begin to add your flowers, twigs, and other choices to bring out your creative side. Arrangements should stand one to one and half times the height of your conatiner. You can also add a bit of mouthwash to your water to act as a biocide, fungicide, and plant food (the alcohol and other chemicals suppress the growth of mold and the sugar gives your flowers and cut greens something to nourish them). I love passing these helpful hints to budding floral arrangers since I have a degree in horticulture and will be opening a floral shop and dress-up tea room in central west Texas real soon.
