Deck protection - what's the best method?

Has anyone ever covered their outdoor deck boards with aluminum or exterior vinyl or anything else? I am looking for a long term solution since staining only lasts 5 years in Florida. Deck is 12' x 20', uncovered and gets plenty of sun.

Staining and sealing only last about four to five years. You can build a pergola, cover with awnings, or fabric deck covers. This will minimize UV rays on the deck.

Check out www.BuildDirect.com. I look at clearance first. They have some nice products that go down over decking. I requested some samples from them and they arrived in a couple of days. I have not purchased from them yet but plan to do so this spring. I live near Pittsburgh, PA and have a similar decking need. I am a retired homeowner and like DIY projects. Hope this helps.

Aluminum or vinyl get SO hot! How about that deck-over repair paint?

Oooo have heard lots of negative reviews on that. After twelve years of blistering cumulative deck issues. I LOVE my technique of blending old into new. Kinda enjoy touch up now. I'll repost separately so you can see how easy it can be.

I bought a house that had vinyl on the deck and after a couple of years I found out the hard way that the wood had rotted from underneath.

Similar problems. But I am happy that I figured out how to blend as needed without redoing the whole deck...

We have much larger deck areas than you. Full wrap around the house... But now that I am blending -- not recoating, it's a lot more FUN!

I'ver heard bad things about deck coating products.

And recladding is a lot of work -- just covering up your problems never works.

I did a retouch on the decks shown in this post that took only a few MINUTES this fall! YEAH! Just keep my touch up stains in the pantry...
