How to Paint Stripes on Drapes That You'll Love

Do you stripes as much as I do?? I had seen a few friends painted stripes on drapes and thought it was a fantastic idea. I LOVE stripes. I love stripes on my bedding (see bedroom)…I love stripes on my plates….I love them on my kitchen valances (see kitchen). I love them everywhere. I always have. Why not on my drapes too?? I love the way they turned out and I did them on a budget too. I found two pairs of white drape panels at a thrift store for $5 for each pair. I bought the chalk paint at Michaels and brought my daughter and we had some coupons. I used 6 bottles of the paint shown below and it was $3.99 a bottle minus a few 40% off coupons so I spend about $30-$35 on paint and drapes.
If you want to do it here is a little tutorial and what you need and the how to’s.
1. Buy white drape panels.
2. Gather your masking tape, pencil and tape measure.
3. Drink your coffee and eat your Wheaties as you’ll need some time and some energy….HA.
4. Lay out your drape panel and measure to figure out how big you want your stripes. I wanted 10″ stripes
5. Measure off 10″ and make with pencil dots across and tape across. Now here is the tricky part and I had to redo a little. When you measure down 10″ you will put your row of tape above where you will paint. Then you will measure another 10″ and put the row of tape under where you will paint. So the rows of tape on the stripes that you are not painting the tape will be closer together. I put some tape across the rows I was not painting just to make sure I wouldn’t make a mistake. This taping process is what takes the longest so make sure you have a day where you can block out some time.
I promise I ironed these before I started….lol. So it’s a lot of taping and this is how it looks when you are done...see below.
6. Get your paint out and I took my drapes outside to paint as I needed lots of room.
7. I wanted a taupe-ish gray color and couldn’t find the exact color so I used this Craft Smart Chalk Paint in equal parts Taupe and Gray and mixed them. I used 6 bottles, 3 of each color and mixed them in a big plastic tray.
8. Then I began rolling the paint on with a small weenie roller. Once I got going it went pretty fast. It was mid 80′s so I had to stand back and drink some water between each panel. I kept looking over at our pool thinking I am gonna get a big raft and float later. Then my daughter and I had fun taking all the tape off. It worked great though and I wondered if it would bleed through and it didn’t. Late that night I sweet talked my honey into hanging them for me. And this is how they look now. What do you think??
Thanks for stopping by and have a great day, Lisa
Here's our living room all decked out for fall.
Here's our drapes that I painted stripes on
Here's how you start. Measure and Tape off.
So when you're done it looks like this.
I used chalk paint and mixed equal parts of these two colors.
Then I began rolling the paint inside the tape.
When you're done it looks like this.
Here's our living room now and I love the pop of color the stripes give!!

I think you meant to say CHALKBOARD PAINT, not chalk paint. There's a difference and Michael's doesn't sell chalk paint. Drapes look classy. great job.
