how is the base of the table attached? that might help decide what options you can switch in.
A friend of mine had these exact chairs, her table had a different chrome base (more of a curved cone shape). She covered the chairs in fabric backed vinyl (not hard to do, but be sure to pull tightly). Her table top was glass with the under part (you could see under the glass) needing to also be covered with vinyl. The top of her table was about the same size as yours. Looks like you could add a glass top to your table to make it larger. It was spectacular when finished, we used it in our design studio for 10 years. Good luck on your project.
pray the bases of chairs and table (if you dont get a new base) a solid black, gray or white and cover the chairs with a solid fabric and the backs a pattern. us can use pictures or whatever you like and place them on the table and cover it with a piece of glass. very interchangeable
How much of a pop are you looking for? Solid vinyl comes in a lot of colors. It's usually as simple as unscrewing the cushions and stapling new fabric over the old fabric.
If it were me, I would use oilcloth, which comes in lots of pretty floral patterns.
Changing out the vinyl is easy enough but don't just cover the existing vinyl remove it first. There are a number of reasons to do this but the ones that specifically apply to you are as follows: 1. your seat won't fit properly into the frame 2. given the age of the set the foam should be replaced . Foam has a natural shelf life of 10 years it will start breaking down regardless of how much use it's had at that point even if it appears okay this is a perfect time to do it. 3. The pieces you remove will make perfect templates for the new pieces. I'm not sure how many chairs you have but you will need approx. 3/4 of a yard per chair (if the back piece is less than 27")
When you're picking out colours of fabric/vinyl and paint (especially greys) bring home samples first, This way you will see what the colours look like in the lighting at your house and not the lighting at the store. This is especially true with greys as they have under tones which may not be apparent in the store.
If you don't want to just spray paint the base of the table (I think spraying the base and the chrome of the chairs a matte black and then sealing it would be awesome) you can find table bases at antique dealerships, craigslist, or just google it there are tons of web sites.
Have you thought of painting the vinyl? I did this on a bar set with 2 chairs. I used chalk paint. It turned out fabulous! You can spray the metal base of your table with a different color metal paint. I'm not sure what your table top is made of.
If the metal is chrome you can make it almost new again by by using aluminum foil like you would use sandpaper. Rub in an inconspicuous area and see if it doesn't sparkle like new. This method even removes bits of rust, too.
