I need help with fabric, I adore farmhouse decor and have not had much luck finding grain sack and farmhouse looking fabric that I see all over home talk! I have wood tones and white/ off white and neutral colors in my home with pops of turquoise and muted sea foam! Any help would be much appreciated:)

Could it be drop clothes that you're seeing used for window treatments?

True vintage grain sacks can not only be hard to find but also quite pricey so many crafters/decorators make their own (faux) grain sack fabric with cloth drop cloths from Lowes or Home Depot. Simply use painters tape to make stripes and then lightly dab on fabric paint (or craft paint mixed with fabric medium) to create the illusion of worn stripes. A paint pen could probably also be used. You can also use stencils to create designs. If you do an internet image search for something like "drop cloth grain sack" or "faux grain sack" you'll see lots of photos that might give you some ideas for creating your own. Also, Pinterest is a good source for inspiration and oftentimes there are links associated with the photos that will take you to a DIY tutorial.

I wanted to also mention large buffalo checks, small gingham checks and ticking stripe fabrics also fall into the "farmhouse" category--both French and Country farmhouse, and those patterns should be readily available in any fabric store.
  • I agree with what becky and shari said, but in addition to that you can't go wrong with burlap, muslin, or duck materials too along with buffalo check, drop cloth, etc.

If you have JoAnn fabrics near you, I saw some fake grain sacks there last week. They look a bit pristine, so if I liked that sort of thing, I would probably bleach them and then maybe spill strong tea on parts, not all over. When I finish a counted X-stitch, I usually soak it in dark tea, then sprinkle a few grains of instant coffee on it (Bought for the purpose. Couldn't drink it!) to look like rust, or other discolouration, often near a white or other pale thread to make it stand out, as the canvas will colour, but the DMC stays the original colour. If some parts are darker than I want, I touch them with a Q-tip and Clorox. (That has to be rinsed straight away though, because it will rot the fabric, if left.)

How about ticking? that black and white stripe that covered mattresses and pillows? It now comes in a variety of colors. http://www.flickr.com/photos/goodbuyannies/3121042433/
