Help with fleas!

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Nov 18, 2013I have to tell you that you may have to put on a topical as well. I used Frontline Plus from the vet for a while until it stopped working and now I use Advantix II which is great! In 24 hours the fleas were off the dogs and cats. The Frontline stopped working and it was a nightmare! We have an Australian shepherd and she is so allergic to them and they attract to her like stink on sh#+ LOL You have to go to the vet to get it. Do not trust the stores especially Walmart. I called the companies and asked them and they only sell directly to the vets and stores or online can get them anywhere even from overseas. I know they do not work in areas where fleas are a problem because I bought them all. Vacuuming is also a plus and I vacuum every 2 days at least sometimes every day in the summer. change the bag often! I sprinkle borax mixed with baking soda on the carpet and let set for a few hours and then vacuum. That helps kill eggs. Wash all bedding and any fabric throws or pillows dog sleeps on. Fleas lay hundreds and hundreds of eggs and they will be hatching for months. I go to our local Prevent a Litter which sells the Advantix II for $11 a treatment which is cheaper than at the store. I would see if you have a local SPCA or other organization that sells it. Good luck.Helpful Reply

Karen Hart on Nov 18, 2013Check with your vet regarding the fleas on the dogs as there could be an interaction from using an over the counter with their current flea repellent. As to your house, try plain table salt on carpets and furniture. Let it sit for 30 minutes then vacuum thoroughly and dispose of the cleaner bag or empty the cup outside. Fleas ingest the salt and it kills them. I have also heard that bathing the animals with DAWN dish soap is effective in killing the fleas and isn't too harsh on their skin. If the fleas are really bad in the house you may have to resort to setting off flea bombs in each room.Helpful Reply

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Nov 18, 2013Flea bombs will not work on eggs. Eggs have to be vacuumed, washed, or swept up. Borax, baking soda, and I think salt would be the same ~it dries out the eggs. Fleas bite into and ingest blood from their host. Dawn is effective and is used for wildlife as well but you cannot bathe your pet for 2 days before or after if you use a topical. I have heard many people say that the heartworm/flea pills are not that effective in some areas. I think the pill only kills fleas which takes about 24 hours for the flea to bite the dog and then die. Supposedly the eggs from the dying fleas are sterile.Helpful Reply
