How many of you have problems with muddy backyards?
-
Mary Tonningsen on Nov 19, 2013I live near Sacramento, CA and I have a miserable back yard! Clay soil that needs to be amended desperately, but I'm disabled and can't do it myself and I haven't had the money to hire someone to do it. When it rains the water soaks in, then puddles up on top and goes nowhere because the builder didn't grade it properly. The dogs love it! :) I have many plantings in pots, was able to find plants that don't mind having soggy feet (or if they do mind, I've been lucky and they haven't died). But the best thing to do if you have soil that stays muddy is to dig down need, amend it well and make sure you have a good drainage system in place. And don't over-water during the dry months! Good luck! BTW, I've posted a bunch of photos of all sorts of things I've grown in pots.Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Nov 20, 2013I happen to live on a hill in Atlanta and my backyard is a jungle! Really, it is! My porch and deck are off the ground so it looks like I live in a tree house...stunning this time of year! It was the thing in the 60s/70s when this neighborhood was built to leave all the trees. No one bothered to clear out the back yards so we have never done it either. Just did not need any more to fool with. I would suggest you plant a couple of trees and make some pine islands as we call them in this area. Instead of bagging up your leaves and/or burning them, pour them over in the pine isles...the dogs love them! You can add a few plants and a pot or two of flowers and make it most attractive! Even put in a walkway, patio or sitting area! I tried to include a photo but the battery is down in my camera!Helpful Reply

Mary Tonningsen on Nov 20, 2013Oh, thank you, Patricia! I just may check in to that although I feel a bit uncomfortable with it. There are so many people in worse shape, both physically and financially, than I am. Despite being unable to do it myself, I'm sure that there are needier people. After all, I'm not in a wheelchair, my arms work, I can pay my mortgage, and buy food and pay my bills. Just can't do the extras. Do you really think it would be OK for me to ask for help from them?Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Nov 20, 2013Not sure to which response you are refering to as a sales pitch @Columbine Landscaping ? Maybe it has already been deleted and I can't see it, but the ones that I do see don't seem to be very sales pitch oriented. If you have a concern I think you can click a flag button and let somone in admin know about it. @Miriam I @Yair SpolterHelpful Reply
