How can i add a landing step to the front of this entrance?

KMS Woodworks on Apr 06, 2011A small deck could be built that extends out over this concrete patio, that is at about the same height as the doors threshold. This would still have you stepping up to the landing ..then walking inside. Either way it is the same 8 or 9" step. Splitting the height into a 4 or 5 inch step might feel weird...since the average step height is already 8 or 9".Helpful Reply

Darby C on Apr 06, 2011KMS is right, you would not usually put in a 4 or 5 inch step, it can be awkard. If you do, I would make it at least 2 feet out from the door. I would use brick, to match the front. The wider you make the step, the easier it will be to handle the awkard step. Hopefully extending a deck will give you the ability to get a proper step.Helpful Reply

Lola on Apr 06, 2011You could look for a decking tile setup. http://www.deckingtiles.com/ is one example. It's not necessarily an endorsement of the product, as I've never used it but it seems suitale for your purpose. As you can see form the website, they're basically 1ft by 1ft squares made with wooden slats over (usually) plastic frames. They snap together and the tiles from the above website is 1.25" tall, making the step height 7.75" or so. These tiles should be pretty durable, and because of the plastic frame, wood doesn't sit on water for very long even if there's rain. I don't think these are cheap though.Helpful Reply

Hudson Designs on Apr 19, 2011Well I think depending on how large the areas is you could over lay it in concrete and slope it away from the house again. This way you can reset the step height. The normal height of a step is 7" but some people like 6" but no less. Is there a side walk it ties to?Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on May 30, 2012This is a lawsuit waiting to happen! You can spend some money now or take the risk of losing everything! Keep in mind that entrances can be changed. You might want to add a small entrance porch at the level of the door opening, with a covering and posts, which steps down to a gradually sloping away walkway. There are people who do this type work. if you want an inexpensive fix, then add a small raised deck with railings (decorative) that leads to a ramp. Something that is a step and a half is DANGEROUS!!!!Helpful Reply
