How do I paint a roll top desk?

I'm a novice to painting furniture, but I have a lead on a beautiful roll top desk, in good condition, but so does not match my color scheme. Can you paint a roll top desk, without a sprayer? I'm worried about the roll top section, since it has to bend. I would want to use chalk paint, since I don't want to go down to bare wood and refinish.
