How to remove decades of rust?

I have a WWI footlocker from my Grandfather. The interior is in excellent condition, however the exterior is heavily rusted. (My father kept it in the garage for years.) I would like to know how to restore the exterior, remove the rust to make it look good again. I'm thinking I may want to use it as part of the furnishings in a smaller family room setting. Any help would be appreciated!

Vinegar, some aluminum foil and a little elbow grease will take off that rust. Try putting the locker in a garbage bag and then laying each side down in the vinegar so the gets a chance to soak. Then when all the rust is off seal the metal, or paint it so it doesn't rust again.

By the way it sounds super cool and I love to see pictures, or to see the post of you fixing it up. Please post either here so I can see them?

There is a product called Rust-Mort, (amazon) that react chemically with rust. After removing the rust flakes or as much as you can with a steel brush, use the Rust-Mort. It stops any future rusting, FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS EXACTLY. Top coat with paint, etc. I've use this on restoring cars.

It's has to to be covered with paint. It can be used on any rusty iron and steel. If put on too thick, it will become gooey and useless.

Believe it or not Brillo pads. I had a rusted old shower rod that I was just trying to smooth out to paint. So I grabbed a Brillo pad and to my amazement it looked good as new-I was shocked!

You may have a problem with the structure underneath your rug.

Flooring might be old and need replacing just a small piece of the flooring.
