Is your cat an outdoor cat?
LOL, I had the same problem. I finally got a box of doggie treats (with permission from my neighbor) and when their dog started barking I simply walk over to the fence with a treat and talk to their dog. Now when their dog barks all I have to do is open my back door and the barking stops.
Regardless of the reason he is barking, the dog's owner is responsible. Many communities have ordinances against persistent barking, and there are technologies for retraining the dog.
yes they do sell collars to stop dogs from barking some spray a sent and others shock them you I have bother types for my barking dogs which only work while they wear them there is a spray that makes the same sound as compressed air but maybe louder it's doesn't cost that much maybe $10 but it sure does keep my dogs in line and I don't even have to spray it (I just hold it and they stop barking) you could even use a water bottle but get permission for that try the compressed air oh yeah you can find that spray at pet smart
The dog owner probably hates it as much as you do. They do not know how to stop it either. Maybe you can work together on this. This barking is not for home protection, it is animal play and can be quite annoying. Make sure you are not as guilty with a loose cat taunting him. Call local animal control first and ask their advice; be well prepared before you discuss this with the neighbor.
As a dog owner the barking is very much annoying but yes do discuss with your neighbors letting them know that it is annoying and try suggesting the collar the citrus or shock they are kind of expensive or the aur spray it's called pet corrector it emits a loyd hissing sound but I think compressed air you know the kind we use for our keyboard you might need to be kind if close for both to be affective or a regular spray bottle with water. Good luck kerp us posted on what you find that works I sure could use the help with my dogs oh yeah I would talk to my neighbo before calling any authority that would be a sure way to cause an issue with them (no one want to have the police or animal control coming to talk to them about a complaint).
Ladies thank you so much for the advice,I would not ever call the Authorities as I get on with my neighbour,I will get some doggie treats but really the dog barks for nothing.I will update you all once I have tried your suggestions.Mary
Why don't you buy a trail camera, and set it up facing your neighbor. Maybe you will be able to identify what is causing your neighbors dog to bark. Hopefully it is not your cat!
I like Bobbie1s thought there. I guess one question I have is how much attention does the neighbor give his dog. Is this a dog that is just left outside? Many dogs will bark to get attention. That attention may come from their owner or you or any one else that does pay attention to it when it does it. I had 2 neighbors who both had dogs who bordered the side of my property. One treated their dog like their child and the other at one point had 2 labs and after one of the labs died a St. Bernard paid no attention to their dogs other than the puppies they had. When I came home all of them would run to the corner or back of their yard near my driveway. I always had doggie biscuits because of my dogs. They waited for their treats and pets. If I parked my truck by the garage they would bark to make sure that I did not forget them. And if they got out of their yards they came and laid by my garage door probably because they knew I liked them and would take care of them. Maybe the dog just needs someone to pay attention to them. There are many reasons that a dog will bark sometimes it is food and or water that is needed.
Thank you for that,I believe you may be right,I have never seen them walking their dogs.I got doggy treats today so hope it works
I do not "walk my dogs" but they are spoiled rotten and definitely know they are loved. People have commented that they never hear my dogs bark although they do but not much. Lana never barked until the last year unless someone strange came in. I am not sure if it was an afraid bark or I am protecting my mom bark. At 13 she is getting possibly a dementia of sorts. If she can see me, she is fine but if she is in another room by herself, she will bark and bark some more.
Thank you Sue .
I cured a rescue dog I had that was a constant barker to begin w/ (long story why). What I did was keep a squirt gun on me all the time. When he'd bark more than 2 or 3 barks he'd get water on his forehead, startling him at the same time I gave a stern "no" in a lower register voice. It did take a year to completely retrain him about barking, but I was able to give up the squirt gun after 3 months.
Yes an authorative voice is good but you usually do not get that in a high pitched tone. A dog knows when someone means what they say. But think about the statement that people will strain to hear a whisper. High pitched tones are shrill. Low tones tend to be softer unless projected like the Oakridge Boys bass singer. A dog is no different. My dogs, all abused rescues, know all my different voices, tones and react accordingly.
dog must be bored if it isn't barking at the cats. not much you can do about the cats but maybe suggest to your neighbour that the dog seems bored or lonely and needs something to do ie dog toys that give treats at the same time
Dogs bark not only at cats and squirrels and strangers but because they're bored. If you don't think you'd make things worse with your neighbor, you could find something online about why dogs bark, print it out and give it to her. Also, the suggestion about giving them treats might help, but dogs gobble treats so that would only keep them busy a short while. Also, many counties and/or cities have ordinances about excessive barking so if the barking dogs are a problem to others, report them. Of course, your neighbors might just get irritated. AND they might take the dogs to the pound where they'd most likely be killed. Do the dogs live inside and just come outside to do their business and get some exercise?
