Do you want to paint and what is the item?
Do you have a photo of what you are trying to alter? Might make it a little easier to give you ideas - one way would be to paint it with a silver metallic paint, then go over it with black acrylic and wipe it away before it dries - letting it stay in the recessed areas a bit and tint the silver a bit - I did it with polymer clay to create pendants -
Paint the item with silver paint, then use some pewter Rub 'n Buff on it. Rub 'n Buff is available at Michaels and Hobby Lobby.
